Is Dion Waiters the New Dwayne Wade in Miami?

The Golden State Warriors’ 7-game winning streak was snapped on Monday night as the Miami heat defeated the Warriors 105-102 on a cold-blooded buzzer beater from Dion Waiters.

The game was close through the entire first half and despite Miami shooting over 50% in the first quarter, they trailed 30-28 heading into the second. Neither team was able to establish more than a 4-point led in the second quarter but Golden State still went into the intermission with a 48-46 lead.

Miami scored 31 points in the third quarter including 13 points for Dion Waiters as they took a 77-73 lead heading into the final frame. The Heat pulled ahead 96-86 with 5 minutes remaining but the Warriors responded with an 8-0 run to bring them to within 2. When the game was tied with the final seconds approaching, Miami looked to their new found star, Dion Waiter to win the game for them, and he didn’t disappoint:

Waiter finished with 33 points on an extremely efficient 13-20 shooting, including 6-8 from 3-point range while also adding 5 rebounds and 4 assists. This is the first game of the season that Golden State has lost when Kevin Durant (27 points), Steph Curry (21 points, 10 rebounds & 8 assists) and Klay Thompson (22 points) each drop at least 20 points. The Warriors shot an uncharacteristically bad percentage from 3-point range, making only 8 of their 30 attempts.

I’m not sure if I have seen enough from Dion Waiters to label him as a Dwayne Wade caliber player but he certainly is showing signs of wanting to take this opportunity with a new team and make the best of it. Waiters averages 14.6 points, 3.7 assists, and 3.6 rebounds this season, which are not the most impressive numbers but he definitely gives Miami fans something to look forward too in the future as he is only 25 years old and provides a perfect base to build around. His talents have been shadowed by Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook his whole career up to this point so it’s nice to see Waiters enjoying the spotlight and taking advantage of it while also helping the Heat win games.
